Flame squares will always be strongly figured from one end of the piece to the other and from one side of the square, all the way through with little to no fading. I think of this as “Jewel quality wood”.
To meet the Dragon’s standards of excellence, the quilt square must have strong figure across the piece. In the best case scenario, that figure strength continues through to the opposite side, but fading on the back side is acceptable as long as figure is still present. If a person turns a bowl from the square, by cutting on the weaker side, the figure will strengthen. Given the rarity of quilt, it is a treasure regardless of the figure quality. The higher the figure, the more dazzling the treasure but even the weakest quilt is amazing.
